Introduction to a Criminal Analysis Enthusiast
Hello everyone! My name is Syd and I will be taking a Mythology and Folklore class this semester at the University of Oklahoma. I am currently a junior majoring in psychology with a minor in spanish!
My goal for my degree is to be a professor at a research institute like OU one day, or working for the FBI to analyze serial killers... I haven't quite decided which I find more exciting. As a kid, I grew up watching Criminal Minds, 48 hours, and NCIS most nights. My mother of course did not want me watching those things because I was 6 years old, but when she would go to sleep I would sneak into the living room and turn on the crime channel. I have always been fascinated by the idea that a normal person can suddenly turn into a violent killer. I have studied many famous killers like Ted Bundy for example. For my 9th birthday I got this really big book filled with all the most popular serial killers to date. Needless to say I read that thing everyday.
It is safe to say that my favorite shows are mostly crime shows like the ones I mentioned earlier, but I also like shows like Vampire Diaries and Grey's Anatomy. I am a person that likes to multitask, so whenever I study I normally have Netflix going with one of my favorite shows on for background noise. I don't really like to read, sadly. My mother has always told me that I should read more, but I just can't stay interested in a book enough to read the whole thing. I also believe that being forced to read and test on books as a kid has made me grow up hating reading... but that's a story for another time.
I also love to go to the beach! It does not matter what beach as long as the sun is shining and the sand is white. Whenever I graduate college my dream is to move to Florida and build myself a cute, blue beach house. Every other year my family takes a big trip to the beach, most of the time we go to Gulf Shores, AL or Pensacola, FL. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were on those trips.
It is also very important that you meet my sweet baby girl Diamond. I rescued her from the pound when she was not even a year old yet, and ever since then we have been inseparable! She loves to take naps with her momma and enjoys popcorn when we watch movies. She also has bad separation anxiety, so whenever I leave for school she cries until I come back.
I am very excited to see my blogs grow this semester! I have never blogged before, but I think it is very cool already! Can't wait for the rest of this semester to begin!
Hi, Syd. My name is Drew. I once knew a girl who was into serial killers like you are. She turned out to be one herself. Just kidding. I was in track in high school as well, but I definitely didn't set any records. I was always trying to make sure I didn't die. Good luck with being a crime analyst or a professor. Both sound like exciting jobs.
ReplyDeleteHi, Syd. I'm back. After being reminded of your two possible professions, I thought of Will Graham from "Hannibal." He lectured at the FBI headquarters (I think) to teach agents and potential agents in the psychology of criminals. Maybe in following evidence, too. He also analyzed crime scenes himself and was instrumental in capturing big bad guys. Maybe you good do that. Just don't get too close to your subjects.

ReplyDeleteI love crime documentaries and shows too. If you have not watch it yet, I recommend you watch Night Stalker on Netflix. It is so interesting learning about crimes and the mindset of serial killers. I recently learned in my Cognitive Psychology class that multitasking is not a real thing. However, that does not stop me from turning on my TV, put on Spotify, and scrolling on Tiktok all at the same time when I do my assignments. Good luck with being a professor or crime analyst.

I am huge into true crime as well. I sometimes feel as though I picked the wrong major since Advertising and true crime don't really fit together in any way. Criminal Minds is amazing, I am a Spencer Reid fan all the way! If you're in to podcasts, you should try out Crime Junkie! I am obsessed.
I played soccer my whole life as well, but I can't say I received a scholarship to play at Bama. That is really impressive! I also ran track. It's funny because I always hated doing sprints at soccer practice, but loved them at track. Was it hard for you to give up soccer? I still miss it a lot.

Hi Syd! I absolutely get your fascination with crime. I love watching documentaries about serial killers, and reading about them. I also think it's interesting how someone can just take a life, and what drives them to do that. I think it would be so cool to be an analyst for the FBI (although I'd probably lean more into an X-Files type career with them). I hope you have a great semester!

ReplyDeleteYour dog is adorable and it is so sweet that you rescued her! On the crime thing i find it interesting but I am a big chicken so I have to watch that stuff with others! I cant even watch a horror movie; like I never ever watch them lol. Also, I read your story on Ezekiel! I think you did an awesome job on it condensing it and making it cohesive. Have an awesome semester and make sure to post updates of your cute pup for us!
Hi Syd, nice to meet you! I think it's so cool how passionate you are about criminology. You seem to know a lot about it. I love the beach too, but sadly haven't been for a while. My family used to travel to Siesta Key, FL every year. That's impressive how much you like running. I've tried to get into it since a few of my family members run marathons, but I never get the "runner's high" feeling.

Now I am thinking it is great that you are doing the Portfolio because in addition to fairy tales and their magic, you can maybe do some "Criminal-Minds"-style stories too. One of my favorite book series is the Thursday Next fairy-tale crime series... have you heard of that? They are so much fun! They are by Jasper Pforde; here is his website: Jasper Pforde website ... he has a "Nursery Crime" series too. So much great stuff!
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally hear you about books being too long for people to read nowadays. I am a bookworm... but if I had grown up with the Internet, perhaps I would be all about Tik-Tok and not book-obsessed. That's actually why I started writing the Tiny Tales of 100 words. My dad had gotten sick and he used to love to read, but he literally could not concentrate for more than a page... but he liked reading the tiny tales, so I started writing them for him, and now I can't stop. I hope that people who just want to read on their phone can enjoy the tales. They are phone-screen-sized, ha ha.
And look at your beautiful Diamond: maybe she can be the star of a story in your Portfolio too before the semester is over.

ReplyDeleteThat's a really cool career goal! I've always sorta kinda wanted to be a forensic anthropologist myself from watching Bones when I was younger, so I can definitely relate to that. It's a competitive field though, so I've been working towards something a bit broader with archaeology. I know it's not psychology, but if you ever get the chance to take Dr Cerezo-Roman's forensic anth class, I'd definitely do it--it's super interesting! Anyways, good luck with the semester and pursuing that psychology degree!

You have lived such an interesting life so far with how successful you were in track, and I can already tell you're going to thrive in the future by the way you talk about your plans and goals! I also LOVE the beach so I am right there with you on moving somewhere sunny, warm, and next to the ocean!
Hi Syd, I enjoyed reading your introduction! I also enjoy reading and learning about crimes and the backstories of the criminals. Like you, I don’t really read much anymore although I did quite enjoy reading when I was younger. I don’t know what happened but at some point in my life, I became more interested in watching shows rather than reading. I hope that you have a great rest of your semester!
